I have looked back to my own blog post for doing this again a few times.

If you are asked if you want to overwrite the file after you enter the first line (ssh-keygen), just send “n” for no. It means, you have already done this, and you do not need to make a new keys for each server you log in to. If you have already made one, you just go directly to line two (the one with mkdir).

ssh-keygen -t rsa — just hit Enter (three times).
ssh username@remoteserver.com mkdir -p .ssh — it asks for remote server password
cat .ssh/id_rsa.pub | ssh username@remoteserver.com ‘cat >> .ssh/authorized_keys’ — asks for remote server password.

In the above code (in this comment), I have added “remote” to the server names, since it may be a little confusing if you are already standing on a server and logging in to a new server. You are never asked for the password to the server you are standing on, only the one you attempt to log in to and save a public key.

i used to use this lenses with my 350d and later on with olded film pentax and i was really dissapointed by very unsharp results at any apperture.. this is not just only very positive review so i wonder if mine wasnt just some crappy one..

Well I have one now. Wide open the image is soft, great for portraits, and by f2.8 the image is pin sharp. A great lens that needs to be kept in sunlight to prevent the browning of the rear element.

Yes it is an excellent portrait lens, but because it is manual focus, it is slower to focus.
I bought mine from eBay for around $150 at the time – they don’t go cheap.

However, I recently shifted boat to Sony, and bought an old Minolta 50/1.4 for it, so this Takumar is not used, so I may put it for sale on eBay myself, along with a m42-Canon adapter with autofocus confirmation.

If you don’t have any autofocus confirm adapters, I strongly recommend you get one for your m42 lenses – they enable the camera autofocus diodes and beeps while focusing manually with these lenses.

Hey Spencer, I don’t know what the problem is, and I do not have time to look into it right now. I will see if I can get it fixed this weekend and update the post with a new solution, so other people can benefit from it too.
When it works it is very convenient, and especially if you have also made a shell script (a file with only one line) so you just type ssh_yourserver and it logs on, with no password prompt.

Hey, thanks for the tutorial, it’s really to the point. I had some problems still though…

Had no problem creating the key, had no problem creating the directory, but as soon as I execute this command:

PowerBook-G4:~ spencerhill$ cat .ssh/id_rsa.pub | ssh username@server.com ‘cat .ssh/authorized_keys’

Welcome to server!
username@server.com‘s password:

It tells me this:
cat: .ssh/authorized_keys: No such file or directory

It didn’t give me any errors creating the directory, so I’m totally lost…

on december 29th 2007 me and my friend went out to wendy’s and noticed the moon was upside down. The shadowing of the moon was it started from the top to the bottom. It was weird, i dont know if its normal or not, but very strange

I have to agree with the parts that I actually understand. All this technical photography mumbo jumbo does me no good at all. Having just ordered a DSLR for myself I’d better get a prime lens in the same category for show off.

Please indulge my attempt to make sense at this hour, but I really need to emphasize how much we all miss updates on this grand site. Really, this is no kidding. Only hours ago I was gazing mouth-open at what I thought was The End Of The Internet, realizing only then that I had much further to go. Yet if you don’t start updating more frequently I might reach it sooner than expected; which by definition would be awkward and illogical. Do have a pleasant vacation and remember to shoot some good frames and perhaps a deer or two. Cheers.
